Lord of the Rings Rings: Every Ring and the Replicas You Can Buy

Tolkien gave Middle-earth twenty Rings of Power: three for the Elves, seven for the Dwarves, nine for mortal Men and the One Ring that Sauron made to rule them all. Add the Ring of Barahir, the old Elven ring that Aragorn gives to Arwen, and you have the rings people usually mean when they say "the Lord of the Rings ring".

Only some of them can be bought as licensed replicas. The One Ring has the most choice by far, from tungsten bands to solid gold made by the workshop that created the film prop. Nenya, Vilya, Narya, the Ring of Barahir and versions of the Nine and the Seven are made under licence too, mostly by smaller jewellers. This page sorts out which ring is which, who makes the replicas and where to read more.

If you only want one thing, it is probably the One Ring. Our One Ring guide covers the prop, the inscription and the replica range, and One Ring replicas compared puts every licensed version side by side on material, price and sizing.

Not sure whether a ring is genuine? Read is this the real One Ring? before you buy anything from a marketplace listing.

The rings and their replicas

The table below lists the main rings, who wears them and whether a licensed replica exists. Price ranges come from the retailers' own websites; the lowest figure is the cheapest version we found of any replica of that ring. Each ring has its own page with the story behind it and every licensed version we found, and the last row covers how Amazon's The Rings of Power series tells the story.

One thing to keep in mind: two different licences are in play. The film version of the One Ring is made by Jens Hansen for Wētā Workshop, under Wētā's licence from Warner Bros. Badali Jewelry works under a licence from Middle-earth Enterprises and designs its own rings from Tolkien's descriptions. Both are legitimate. They answer different questions: what did the prop look like, and what does the book describe?

Buying for a wedding or an engagement

Several of the rings above are sold as wedding bands. A solid gold One Ring or a plain gold band in the film shape is the usual route, and our Lord of the Rings wedding bands guide explains what changes when a ring has to last decades on one finger. For a proposal, the Ring of Barahir has a better story than the One Ring, and our engagement rings guide covers it alongside Nenya.

The material decides more than the price. Tungsten vs gold vs silver explains why a tungsten ring cannot be resized and why silver darkens over time. Sizes differ between countries and retailers, so check yours with our ring size converter and the One Ring size guide before ordering.

Reviews

We have not had these rings in our hands yet, so our reviews do not give star ratings. Each one separates what the maker states from what we could not check:

The story behind the rings

The film ring was designed and made in Nelson, New Zealand. Who made the One Ring? tells that story, from the prototypes in 1999 to the more than forty versions used on set, and Jens Hansen and the One Ring follows the workshop from 1968 to today. The One Ring inscription explains the words around the band, which language they are in and why the prop ring itself is plain. And if you have ever lost count, how many Rings of Power are there? goes through all twenty.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy the actual ring from The Lord of the Rings?

No retailer sells the rings used on set. The rings on sale are replicas, and the closest to the prop are the licensed versions made by Jens Hansen, the workshop that made the film rings.

Which Lord of the Rings ring is the most popular?

The One Ring, by a wide margin. It is also the ring with the most licensed versions, in tungsten, silver and gold.

Are Lord of the Rings rings licensed?

Some are. Jens Hansen makes the One Ring for Wētā Workshop under its Warner Bros. licence, and Badali Jewelry designs rings under a licence from Middle-earth Enterprises. Many marketplace rings carry no licence at all.

Is the Ring of Barahir one of the Rings of Power?

No. It is an old Elven ring from the First Age that passed down to Aragorn. It has no special power in the story, but it is the ring Aragorn gives to Arwen when they are betrothed.

How many rings are there in The Lord of the Rings?

Twenty Rings of Power: three Elven rings, seven Dwarf rings, nine rings for Men and the One Ring. Tolkien also mentions lesser rings that were practice pieces.

Can a Lord of the Rings ring be a wedding band?

Yes. Solid gold and silver One Ring replicas are often bought as wedding bands. Tungsten versions are cheaper but cannot be resized, which matters for a ring you plan to wear for decades.
