Tungsten vs Gold vs Silver One Ring: Which Material to Choose
Every licensed One Ring follows the same idea: a plain, heavy band with the inscription around it. The material is what changes the price, how the ring looks after a few years and whether it can be resized. This guide goes through the four materials you will meet most often, with no prices; for those, see One Ring replicas compared.
Tungsten carbide
Tungsten carbide is a very hard, dense ceramic like material. Jens Hansen's licensed tungsten One Ring, also sold by Wētā Workshop, is tungsten carbide with an 18K gold plated surface.
Good for: everyday wear and a gift on a budget. It resists scratches far better than silver or gold and has the heavy feel people expect from the One Ring.
Watch out for: sizing. Both Jens Hansen and Wētā Workshop say this ring cannot be resized, and Jens Hansen adds that half sizes are not available. Our One Ring size guide explains how to measure a finger before you order. Hard materials like tungsten carbide can also crack if they take a sharp knock against stone or tile, rather than bending the way gold does. The gold colour is a plating, so heavy wear can eventually show the grey metal underneath.
Sterling silver
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver mixed with other metals, usually copper, to make it harder. Jens Hansen, Wētā Workshop, The Noble Collection and Badali Jewelry all sell silver One Rings, in different designs.
Good for: solid metal at a middle price, and some flexibility on fit. Jens Hansen says its silver ring can be stretched or compressed by about one US size, and Badali offers quarter sizes and a resize or exchange service.
Watch out for: tarnish and scratches. Silver darkens with exposure to air and moisture and picks up fine marks with daily wear. Both are normal and can be polished away, but a silver ring will never look exactly like the gold film ring. Some silver rings are gold plated, which gives the colour but wears with time.
10K gold
10 karat gold is roughly 42% pure gold. The rest is other metals that make it harder. Jens Hansen's Gollum Ring and Badali's entry level gold ring are 10K.
Good for: a solid gold ring that copes well with daily wear, which is why it is popular for wedding bands. It can be resized by a jeweller within limits.
Watch out for: colour. 10K gold is paler and less rich than 18K, and side by side the difference is visible.
18K gold
18 karat gold is 75% pure gold, the same carat as the ring filmed for The Lord of the Rings according to Jens Hansen. Wētā Workshop takes orders for an 18K One Ring made in Jens Hansen's workshop, and Badali offers 18K and 22K versions of its own design.
Good for: the closest match to the prop in colour and weight, and a ring to keep for life.
Watch out for: price and softness. Higher carat gold scratches and wears more easily than 10K, so an 18K ring worn every day will show its age sooner.
A quick way to decide
- You know your size and want the film look for the least money: tungsten.
- You want solid metal and some room to adjust the fit: sterling silver.
- It is a wedding band you will wear every day: 10K or 14K gold, which our wedding bands guide covers in more depth.
- You want the ring as close to the prop as possible: 18K gold, or the plain Movie Ring if you do not need the inscription, explained in is this the real One Ring?.
For the individual rings, see the reviews of the tungsten, silver and 10K gold Jens Hansen rings, and the story of the prop on our One Ring page.
Frequently asked questions
Can a tungsten One Ring be resized?
No. Jens Hansen and Wētā Workshop both state that the tungsten carbide ring cannot be resized, so you need to order the right size.
Does a silver One Ring tarnish?
Yes. Sterling silver darkens over time. A polishing cloth removes it, and storing the ring in a closed bag slows it down.
Is 10K gold real gold?
Yes. 10K gold is about 42% gold mixed with other metals. It is harder and a little paler than 18K gold, which is 75% gold.
Which material is closest to the film ring?
Gold. Jens Hansen says the ring filmed for The Lord of the Rings was 18ct yellow gold.
