The One Ring is a plain gold band. That is the point of it. In Tolkien's story it looks like an ordinary ring until it is thrown into a fire, and in Peter Jackson's films it is a smooth, heavy, very yellow circle that catches the light in close-up. Everything else about it, the menace and the pull it has on whoever carries it, comes from the story and not from decoration.

This page covers the ring as it appears in the books and films, the inscription, the rings Jens Hansen made for the production, and what you can buy today. If you already know the background and only want to choose a replica, go straight to One Ring replicas compared.

The ring in the story

Sauron forged the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom during the Second Age, to control the other Rings of Power. It is lost when Isildur cuts it from Sauron's hand, lies at the bottom of the river Anduin for some two and a half thousand years, and passes through Déagol and Gollum before Bilbo Baggins finds it in the caves under the Misty Mountains. Frodo inherits it, and the rest is the plot of The Lord of the Rings.

You do not need the whole history to buy a replica, but two details explain a lot about the products. The ring changes size to suit its wearer, which is why the films needed so many physical versions. And it carries a hidden inscription, which is why replicas are sold "with Elvish runes" or without.

The inscription

Heated in a fire, the ring shows a line of writing on the inside and outside of the band. The script is Tengwar, the Elvish alphabet Tolkien invented, but the language is the Black Speech of Mordor. In English, the words read:

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

So when a retailer says "Elvish runes" and another says "Black Speech", they are both describing the same engraving from different angles: Elvish letters, Sauron's language. Our article on the One Ring inscription goes into the words, the script and why the film prop does not have them.

The rings made for the films

Peter Jackson's art department approached the Nelson jeweller Jens Hansen in March 1999. He submitted fifteen prototypes, the production chose one design, and Jens and his son Thorkild went on to make more than forty versions for filming. Some were small solid gold rings sized for Hobbit fingers. One was about eight inches across, for the prologue shot of the ring turning in the air. Jens Hansen died in August 1999 and never saw the films. The full story is in who made the One Ring?

According to the Jens Hansen workshop, the ring filmed for The Lord of the Rings was 18ct yellow gold, weighed about 17 grams, was 2.7 mm thick through the band and about 7 mm wide. It had no inscription. The glowing writing in a few scenes was added by computer in post-production, and in The Hobbit films the inscription is never shown.

Can you buy the One Ring today?

You can buy replicas, not the props. They fall into three groups.

The film design, licensed. Jens Hansen makes the One Ring with the inscription exclusively for Wētā Workshop, under Wētā's licence from Warner Bros. Both sell the gold plated tungsten carbide ring at $129 and the sterling silver ring at $399. Jens Hansen also sells a 10K solid gold version from $3,999, and Wētā Workshop takes orders for an 18K gold version from $8,799.

Licensed, but not the film prop. The Noble Collection sells several One Ring replicas, from a stainless steel band at $59 to a gold plated sterling silver ring with chain at $159. Badali Jewelry makes its own One Ring under a licence from Middle-earth Enterprises, in silver from $139 and in gold from $2,499, with the inscription split between the outside and inside of the band.

The film shape without the licence. Jens Hansen also sells a plain Movie Ring in the shape of the prop, without the inscription and without the licence. It is the closest thing to what was actually on set, but it is not a licensed One Ring product.

Gollum ring, Bilbo ring: what the names mean

Search for a One Ring replica and you will meet the "Bilbo Ring" and the "Gollum Ring". These are Jens Hansen product names, not two different rings in the films. The Bilbo Ring is the sterling silver version and the Gollum Ring is the 10K solid gold version; both carry the same inscription and the same shape. The naming is a nod to who held the ring, nothing more, and there is no silver ring in the story.

Our reviews cover them separately: the sterling silver One Ring, the 10K gold One Ring and the tungsten One Ring, which is the same product Wētā Workshop sells as its tungsten One Ring.

Frodo's chain

Frodo carries the ring on a chain around his neck, and Jens Hansen made that chain for the films too. The workshop sells a sterling silver recreation, 65 cm long with an S-shaped clasp, at $349. It is sold separately from the rings.

Which material?

The choice usually comes down to how you plan to wear it. Tungsten is cheap, heavy and scratch resistant but cannot be resized. Silver is affordable and can be adjusted a little, but it tarnishes. Gold is closest to the prop and lasts a lifetime, at a very different price. Tungsten vs gold vs silver explains the trade-offs, and if the ring is meant as a wedding band, read the wedding bands guide first.

The table below lists every licensed One Ring we track. For a closer look at each one, see One Ring replicas compared, and for the other rings of Middle-earth go back to the Lord of the Rings rings overview.
