Lord of the Rings Wedding Bands: One Ring, Movie Ring and More

The One Ring is a strange choice for a wedding band if you think about the story too hard, and a lovely one if you do not. It is a plain gold ring, it fits the idea of one ring for life, and for a couple who share the story, that may be reason enough. This guide covers the options and the practical points that matter more for a wedding band than for a ring you wear now and then.

Your main options

A licensed One Ring in solid gold. Jens Hansen, the workshop that made the film rings, sells a 10K solid gold One Ring with the inscription and describes it as a perfect Lord of the Rings wedding ring. Wētā Workshop takes orders for an 18K version from the same workshop. Badali Jewelry makes its own gold One Ring design in 10K to 22K gold, in sizes from 4 to 20. The Movie Ring. Jens Hansen also sells the plain film shape without the inscription, in silver and in 9ct to 22ct gold, and markets it as an Elvish wedding band. It can be engraved inside, outside or both with your own words, in English or in Elvish, though not with the licensed One Ring inscription. A silver One Ring. Cheaper, and Jens Hansen says its silver ring can be adjusted by about one size. Silver is softer and tarnishes, so it suits people who are happy to polish and do not mind a ring that ages visibly.

A tungsten One Ring. Hard wearing and affordable, but it cannot be resized, which is the main reason we hesitate to recommend it as a wedding band.

Things to check before you order

Sizing over the years. Fingers change size with age, weight and climate. A wedding band that can be resized will last; one that cannot may need replacing. Width and comfort. The film ring is about 7 mm wide, according to Jens Hansen, which feels substantial on a smaller hand. Badali changes the width of its One Ring with the size, from 6.5 mm on smaller sizes to 8 mm on the largest, which may suit a pair of rings in very different sizes.

The inscription. In the story, the inscription is Sauron's spell of domination. You can keep it, choose the plain Movie Ring with a message of your own, or have your own words engraved in Elvish. Our article on the One Ring inscription explains what the words say.

Lead time. Made to order rings take longer. Badali asks for 5 to 10 business days, and Wētā Workshop's 18K ring is ordered with a deposit by email. Leave plenty of time before the wedding.

Metal colour. Jens Hansen's licensed gold One Ring is yellow gold only, with optional rhodium plating for a white look that needs renewing. Badali offers white and rose gold in some carats.

Men's and women's bands

There is no separate men's or women's One Ring in the licensed ranges; the difference is the size. If you want two rings that look the same on very different fingers, check the size range first. Jens Hansen's gold One Ring comes in US 7 to 11, so smaller or larger sizes may push you towards Badali or the Movie Ring.
